Barrel Care and Maintenance
Keep the wood breathing, keep the hoops snug, and keep water from sitting where it shouldn’t. Those three things determine how long a reclaimed barrel planter lasts outdoors.
---
🌦️ Positioning and drainage
• Raise it slightly on feet, bricks, or gravel so the base never sits in standing water.
• Add drainage holes if they aren’t already there; oak lasts far longer when excess water can escape.
• Use a coarse layer (gravel or broken terracotta) at the bottom to stop soil clogging the holes.
---
🪵 Wood care
• Let it grey naturally if you like the weathered look; this doesn’t harm the structure.
• Oil the exterior once or twice a year if you want to slow greying and reduce surface cracking. Exterior tung oil or a clear UV‑protective wood oil works well.
• Avoid film‑forming varnishes outdoors; they peel and trap moisture.
---
🔩 Hoop maintenance
• Tap hoops down if they creep upward during long dry spells. A rubber mallet and gentle taps are enough.
• Check for rust on non‑galvanised hoops. Light rust is normal; heavy flaking can be brushed back and treated with a clear metal protector.
---
🌱 Soil and planting
• Use a lighter, well‑draining mix rather than dense topsoil; it reduces constant moisture against the staves.
• Leave a small gap between soil level and the rim so water doesn’t overflow down the outside every time you water.
• Rotate the planter occasionally if one side gets much more sun or rain than the other.
---
🧼 Cleaning and seasonal care
• Rinse out algae or soil buildup on the outside with water and a soft brush.
• Avoid pressure washers; they force water into the grain and can loosen hoops.
• In very dry summers, splash the outside lightly to keep the staves from shrinking too fast.
